In Writing we have been learning to: Write a formal letter.

We have followed the writing process and have planned and drafted a formal letter.

This shows the process that we have followed.

Here is the letter that I have written Link
Here is my reflection on the letter writing that we have done.

My next step is: look for more opportunities to put my letter writing knowledge into practice in the future.

WALT: Write an effective argument for our chosen political party.

Have you voted yet?
I think that the maori party are going to make a difference because they are saying they are going to end homelessness and make doctors appointments free for some ages. I am going to cover people with rheumatic fever and free doctor and dentist appointments. Rheumatic fever affects your heart.

Halve power bills for households with rheumatic fever.
It is helping families with rheumatic fever by giving them cheaper power so they can heat their house which helps people with the fever. If it’s cheaper than they can spend more money on medication, doctors appointments and to make their child comfortable. Not as stressed because they have more money and they could save the spare money for a new house that's not as damp and is warmer. Lots of children don't make their own money so It’s good that parents wouldn't have to pay.

Make doctor and dentist visits free for under 18s.
They will make it free for children under 18. Right now It’s only free for under 14s or 15s. Because young people shouldn't have to pay for their dentist until they are old enough to understand what is in their food. Lots of young people don't make their own money so their parents shouldn't have to pay for the visits especially if they dont have lots of money. As well as children getting free dentist and doctor visits older people should get at least one for free too.

Provide everyone over 55 with one free annually doctor and dentist visit.
Everyone over 55 will get one free doctor and dentist visit once a year. Because about that time people start retiring, so they don’t make as much money. So it’s good because they don't have to pay as much. They are also getting old so need to see the doctor for lots of things. So they will be saving a bit of money. While the Maori party have some great policy’s some other parties have shocking Policy’s.

Continue aiming for 90 percent of lakes and rivers to be swimmable by 2040.

National wants to try and clean up most of the rivers and lakes by 2040. Because They should clean 100% of the rivers and lakes. We want to be able to swim and use all of them. It’s also bad because 2040 is 23 years away. We want to be able to swim in them now. Now  that you have heard all my points it’s time to wrap them up.

Overall If I could vote I would vote for the Maori party.
Maori party are trying to end homelessness. I have gone over free health care for some ages and ending homelessness. So who are you going to vote for? I know who I'm going to vote for.

My next steps are: I would have a better Concluding Statement.

Current Events Term 2, 2017

WALT: I can successfully research a current event.
Here is a link to our online modelling book for this unit of learning.

The National Standard that I have been aiming for during this unit of learning is:

  • Year7/8: I can use appropriate skills and technologies to find and use a range of texts for specific purposes.

Each week we have read a short text about a current event/ topic. We then formed questions based on what we had read.  After this we researched the answers to our questions and finally we gave our opinions on what we had found out.

Here is some evidence of my learning.

My Next Step is to continue to  apply the reading and  research skills that I have learned in a variety of other areas.

Careers Education C.V. Writing

In CAREERS EDUCATION we have been learning to write a skills based Curriculum Vitae.

A skills based C.V. focuses more on the skills that we have,  rather than our work history.

Here is a link to our online Modelling Book that shows the process we have followed.

Three things that I have learned about writing a Curriculum Vitae are:

  1. You need to have referees to prove your skills.

  1. You write about skills.

  1. You do a personal statement and about your hobbies.

Here is a link to my Skills based Curriculum Vitae. (C.V. here)

Reading - Text Composition

In reading we have been learning to….
recognise the way words, sentences and paragraphs are put together (eg sentences that express cause and effect) and use this knowledge to understand complicated texts.

These documents show evidence of my learning during this unit:
(link your own learning for each of these activities. Please make sure your sharing settings are open)

My Next Step: Is to continue to apply this new knowledge of parts of texts, to help me make sense of increasingly complicated text types.

The Human Fly Trap

This story is about a boy who lives with his Mum, Dad and Sister. They were moving house while his Dad was at work. They had a moving truck that hadn't yet come. It was a really strange town. Their new neighbour was a old lady she came running over shouted get out get out. He went to the bathroom and found police tape in the bin. Later that night he went up to bed early and didn't have any curtains and suddenly lightening struck and a face appeared. I think this book is very enjoyable and you should read it if you like mysteries.

Blog Title: Term 1 Novel Study

Term 1 Novel Study

This term I have been reading and studying the novel See Yah, Simon

I found this novel good  because I learnt about muscular dystrophy

During the novel I had to complete two major assessment tasks. The first is an Explain Map which shows the consequences of a major event in the book. The second was a Describe++ Map (Inference map) which shows I how I have connected prior knowledge and other experiences to what I have been reading to make an inference.

National Standard this covers...

  • Year 9/10 Standard
    • I can monitor my understanding as it develops during my reading, and adjust my strategies to address any comprehension problems Eg: If I don’t understand a passage I have read I can re-read it, read-on, use pictures or diagrams, or explore the meaning of some of the vocabulary.
    • I can use strategies to analyse ideas and information and to reflect critically on the meaning I am gaining from my reading. (Eg: I can think about the meaning of the information and ideas and how this fits with what I think)

In PE we have been participating in a variety of games that require little or no equipment.
Below is the Matrix which shows our progression in this unit of learning.

Screen Shot 2017-03-12 at 12.32.06 PM.png

The table below shows my understanding of games with minimal or no equipment.
(Fill this table in, in as much detail as possible. )

Examples of Games that need minimal or no equipment.
What equipment would we usually need to play these games.
Why do we play games with minimal or no equipment?
Invisible touchBibs
Cones
So we can play them at lunch

Writing

In writing I have been learning to:
  • use all basic punctuation independently
  • attempt more complex punctuation (eg semicolons, colons, parentheses)

I have been especially focussing on using parentheses and commas. I have highlighted these in green where I have used them as well as other punctuation that I changed because it was used incorrectly. Here is a piece of my writing that shows this.

One of the leadership traits of an effective leader is Goal focused. An example of a goal focused person is Cristiano Ronaldo because he is determined to score a goal against Lionel Messi. In my my role it is important to be Goal Focused because If were not we might get side tracked about other stuff and get nothing done. The way I am going to show this in my role is to only do one goal at a time and go in a quiet place so I don't get distracted. But as well as being Goal Focused you will need to be Trust Worthy.

Leadership area blogpost #3 (Merit)

                                    Leadership meeting

At the leader meeting today we watched a video from the grip leadership. It told us activities to do throughout the year. Then the house captains came up with an idea that we are going to do. We chose to have four rubbish bins each in the four house colours and who ever filled their bins with rubbish first gets lots of house points. The second gets a bit less and so on. It will help keep the school tidy and its another way to get house points.  So therefore I showed Community.

At lunch it wasn't compulsory but I went. I had to paint the smaller ones because the big ones were finished later on. We had to paint crates brown to look like kit kats. The care values I showed were excellence because I was the only one to bring a painting shirt and I also showed community for showing up to the optional session .

                                    Leadership meeting

At the leadership meeting we all got given a sticky note and a pen that we had to right a theme that someone would have to talk about. Then we put them in a pile. And got given one that we had to talk about for thirty seconds. The care value I showed was Respect for respecting the speakers and laughing at appropriate times.

Leadership blog post #2 (Merit)

                                         Gardening club

Today at Gardening club we were getting ready for the garden show. At the gardening club we are going to have big candy canes for the garden show so last year we sanded the tubes that will be used for the candy canes so that the paint would stick. But today there were three jobs one was getting cups and making holes in the bottom so water could drain out. Another one was to fill the cups with dirt and poke a hold in the dirt so the plant can go in. The last job was to take the plants out of a container and put them in the cups. When they grow they will be red and white to go on the candy canes. The care value's I showed were excellence because I did it fast.

Today at the leader's meeting we got our job descriptions for our role. Each position has different objectives on the job description.  One of the things on my job description was to do a house activity each term. I showed Respect by looking and listen to the teacher.

Leadership blogpost #1 (Merit)

                                        Gardening Club

At gardening club we had to move wine barrels that had plants inside back to where they were before the holidays. Last year we had moved them behind the classrooms. I showed Community because I helped a teacher by moving the plants back, I also showed excellence by getting the job done quick.

Home Learning Challenge #1 (Merit)

This evening I completed one of the active thinking home learning challenges, I created 2 cards. The first card was a birthday card. To make the  bunting I used real bunting and cut off the bottom and then stuck them to the card with glue. Then I wrote Happy Birthday with pens. As my mum's birthday is coming up I am planning on giving the birthday card to her. She will really like the card as she loves silver.
